Whats inside my Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore?

lots of people have asked and barring a few pictures, some of which have appeared in this site and in watchtime when they reviewed the ROO, watchfan1, a cool collector has taken the caseback off in a little project of his that will probably ensure he gets to see it a lot more :)

here are some pics and links to his original posts link1 link2
and if you're interested to check out his fantastic collection, do pop by his site

popped off the caseback and oohhh what do we have here

A brief and satisfying encounter wif a German lass

She's actually with a good friend of mine but when i saw her, i knew i had to see more of her. Her quiet profile spoke of more depth, something hidden perhaps, an inner strength or beauty... possessing an allure that entrances and drives one to discover more...

Ok enough of that... and you, yes you, get your mind out of the gutter now ;) I am of course talking about a watch, what were you thinking of huh? but oh, what a watch it is...

The Lange & Sohne Datograph Platinum is GORGEOUS!!! For watch lovers we often speak of buying watches that sing to us...this one wasn't just singing, it was hitting me with a full on symphony... A cadence of siren sounds that swept this WIS into the horological heavens and bathed me in warm German silvery glow. It achieves instant 'grail watch' status and is easily one of the most important contemporary chronographs ever produced.

i gotta get me one of these ...or not... wife really dissaproves n i dun blame her,
prices on this baby r just a bit much.. jus a bit... ok maybe more than a bitPhotobucket

Control, raph, U must learn control... uhm must I?Photobucket

Honestly, does it get any better than this?Photobucket

this is SOOO COOOLL!!!
Photobucket

still at a loss for words.. Photobucket

simply stunning...Photobucket

As noted in my intro, its not my watch (unfortunately) but a very good mates new acquisition. He was kind enough to let me have my way wif her for about 10mins and the quick and dirty pictures u see are from this brief but satisfying fling ;) I hope to take more pictures of her again soon and will post some better pics then. cheers

the lost photos...

some photos i took during the tempus exhibition of watches i found interesting... some i like, some i puzzle over but all i still can't afford... yet ;)

the AP Royal Oak Concept... A mighty interesting concept it is
Photobucket

maximillian busser and friends ... the MB&F Horological Machine 1 (HM1) ...
this one i don't get. the closer i zoom in the nicer it is... meaning the bits and pieces are really nice but the overall aesthetic with its funky case shape just doesn't appeal. ditto for the HM2
Photobucket

this one i like... the past and the future combined in it
vianney halter antiqua... this is art
Photobucket

urwerk 103 blackbird... satellites of love... what a black beauty
Photobucket

richard mille getting it wrong... the RM 16

just a damn fine opinion - editorial :)

Note: Permission was sought and obtained for the usage of this piece from the
owner Mr. Chuck Maddox and in its unadulterated form can be viewed at this
link

The question posed in the timezone forum and Chucks revert are all there is to say about this :) any minor additional edits of mine is in orange

now an opinion, if you don't mind ... given the choice and cash in your hand, would you pick a new one (moonwatch), or hold out for a top notch, vintage with 321? which and why?

I think I'll go back to my old standby reasoning... Randall 'Memphis' Raines (Nicholas (Coppola) Cage) from the movie “Gone in 60 Seconds”.

Scene in an L.A. Hollywood area Ferrari Dealership

Photobucket

Roger (Ferrari salesman): My name's Roger, Sir. May I be of some help?

Randall 'Memphis' Raines: That's funny, my name's Roger... Two Rogers don't make a right. hahaha... Roger, I have a problem...

Roger: Yes?

Memphis: I've been in L.A. for three months now. I have money, I have taste. But I'm not on anybody's ‘A’ list, and Saturday night is the loneliest night for the week for me.

Roger: Well, a Ferrari would certainly change that.

Memphis: Perhaps, Mmmm. But, you know, this is the one. Yes, yes yes. ...

Memphis: ... I saw three of these parked outside the local Starbucks® this morning, which tells me only one thing. There's too many self-indulgent wieners in this city with too much bloody money! Now, if I was driving a 1967 275 GTB four-cam ...

Roger: You would not be a self-indulgent weiner, sir... You'd be a connoisseur.

Memphis: Precisely. Champagne would fall from the heavens. Doors would open. Velvet ropes would part.

_____________________________________________________________

Ok... Substitute the car Memphis is gesturing at with just about any new watch, and exchange the phrase ‘1967 275 GTB four-cam’ with 1967-69 ST 145.012 Pre-Moon Pro, and you pretty much have my feelings on the topic.

It's not that the new ones aren't nice, it's not that they are less of a watch than the old one. No they are fine watches. But the vintage ones, they are something special.

Kapesch?

Chuck

Yes I kapesch... Hear Hear ;) and do check out the
short vid below if u havent seen it before

here me now... always try... before you buy ;)

The Most important thing to do before u buy a watch is simply this...

See it in the metal AND put it on yr wrist n check yourself out wif it on.

Photobucket
Vianney Halter Classic... Made by a master but was small
and funny looking on me... & the Antiqua is way out of budget... sigh
Was looking at and tried on a RG version with WG dial... tiny

As with all enthusiasts its often about the hunt n wats next. i had both these 2 watches on my radar screen as i have been thinking about something in yellow or rose gold... well i quickly struck em both off the list after putting them on my wrist and checking myself out in the store wif em on... seeing them off the wrist they still looked pretty fine though but once on my wrist. it was a no go.

So best advice in this day and age of the internet and gorgeous watch pics all over the net and watch forums is see the watch you are targetting in the metal as the first step and the best advice is put it on your wrist and see your reflection with it on. then you will know if its for you... well thats my 2 cents worth at least ;) enjoy the hunt people ... whats on your radar then? :)

big pimpin... but it felt a tad small on my wrist...
Photobucket

looks really nice imo but it aint for me...
probably no daytonas for the raphmeister... or maybe no YG?
but never say never on both counts ;)

my first Patek... well kind off...

Photobucket

in a very short while... it will be 2 years to the day since i exchanged marriage vows to the loveliest lady on the planet(in my eyes yuh ;) she has been a great wife and mother to our little boy and i thought of buying her a little gift... as you know, watches make pretty fine gifts... so to add to her collection of franck mullers(plural), rolex, gerald genta mickey mouse (she swears she's not a WIS, just bought them cause they looked pretty :) i got this most important lady in my life a Patek as her 2nd anniversary present :)

for me this is the most beautiful 'elegant style' ladies watch out there bar none... sure i've seen the franck mullers, the chopard happy diamonds, the girard perregaux cat's eyes, RM007, AP ladies royal oaks, the cartiers and the rolexes... but this one IS elegance & classy chic in a watch ;)

diamonds as they say are a girls best friend...
Case set with 36 Top Wesselton diamonds at 0.45karats...
Black dial set with 10 diamond markers & a
Black Onyx cabochon crown
Photobucket

Patek Phillippe Twenty-Four 4910/10A-001 ... observe if you will the appliqué white gold Roman numerals with white gold baton hands :)
Polished bracelet with double folding deployant clasp & Calatrava Cross

Photobucket

timeless elegance is a good quality to have in a watch ;)
especially if theres any intention of passing it on to the next generation

Photobucket

now i dun understand why i had issues with the quartz movement...
its looks, practicality for ladies, trump any
'quartz resistance in a swiss luxury timepiece' i had BIG TIME :)

Photobucket

Some Specs

  • Water resistant: 30 m
  • Case dimensions: W25 x L30 x H6 mm
  • Quartz Caliber E 15, Ultra thin movement, 6 Jewels, decorated with Cotes de Geneva. Signed and numbered. Total diameter: 16.3 mm,Thickness: 1.80 mm. Number of parts: 57
  • Geneva Seal Hallmark
  • Battery life: about 3 years
(ladies' watches that i don't fancy in no particular order... tag heuer(all of em), Audemars piguet millenary(all of em), ebel(all of em...only giselle is worth any attention :), blancpain(yawn), Vacheron constantin(ehh whats that supposed to be exactly?), Zenith(too painful to even look at), UN(nope), baume and mercier(uhm nope), GO(their mens watches are better), Hublot(no thanks), Lange(mens watches better), corum(many weird ones...), delaneau(too flowery or too fierce), breguet(doesn't interest me)... and of course there are so many others out there that are not even worth mentioning... so easily the best choice for me and my wife LOVES it too... most excellent ;)
